Mathew Heggem, dance & media artist/educator/administrator, currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. Seeking to connect his understanding of ballet with his experience in contemporary dance, Heggem bridges an experimental and visionary approach to classical technique, improvisation and partnering. Understanding beauty through the method of performance and engaging a creative, spiritual practice through the medium of his body is foundational in his life’s work.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest (Bellingham, WA), he relocated to the East Coast in 2003 and has since performed nationally. He began his training at Pacific Dance Company under the tutelage of Eliese Kerman studying theater performance, ballet and modern dance. To date, his knowledge within the field of dance has expanded to include contemporary ballet, improvisation, partnering techniques and various traditional and contemporary cultural forms.

Studying dance and choreography at Goucher College (MD), he had a breadth of performance experiences with students, faculty and guest artists; highlights in ballet include the Bournonville Project with Gage England and Henley Haslam; Don Quixote, restaged by Charla Genn; and contemporary works by Robert Weiss. Modern and contemporary works include excerpts from Esplanade, staged by Rachel Berman, and original choreography by Robert Moses and Adrienne Clancy. Heggem received the America College Dance Festival/ Dance Magazine Best Student Performer Award at the national’s conference, held at the Kennedy Center, in May 2006.

At the forefront of his artistic interests, Heggem collaborates with fellow artist, Wendell Cooper, co-creating duets under their company, Kinaesthesia. Together, they’ve performed at Baltimore’s Transmodern Festival, Gloucester New Arts Festival (Gloucester, MA), Dance Conversations @ the Flea (NYC), Dixon Place (NYC), and the Sublet Series (NYC).

Other major choreographic projects include: “Vision, Creation and Energy in the Discourse of Being,” a 10-month, research-based project which concluded with a final performance at Baltimore’s H&H building; a solo-turned-duet, entitled “Letting Forward” at the Baltimore Theater Project; and, his current year-long project, Arctic Genesis - a creative & spiritual re-birth.

Heggem performs with nicholasleichterdance and serves as Marketing & Media Manager for Dancing in the Streets.

  • Jerusalem Dispossessed | Activestills
If Jerusalem is to remain the symbol of peace and tole-rance it cannot be a ghetto for anyone or owned by any particular group. In the same year that Israel celebrates 40 years of the so-called “unity” of Jerusalem, the city has been divided by force, discrimination and injustice. In the “holy city” of 2007, it seems that the only god is “security” and real estate. Israeli policy is drawing a twisting path of a wall that more than anything ensures more conflict, suffering and despair. The future of Israel cannot be built by blocking the potential of the other. Any negotiation taking place while facts and borders are aggressively being determined according to one side’s interests, is just an illusion. Without real freedom and respect of the other’s right to live in dignity, there is no basis for political negotiation. October 2007
  • Resisting the Capitalist Production of Space.
“Ten Days for Oppositional Architecture” takes up the task of exploring possibilities and conditions of a socially committed architectural practice. Therefore the narrow boundaries of the profession have to be left behind. We hence invite activists, geographers, architects, planners, and economists representing different critical approaches to discuss and develop concepts and practices that not only try to oppose and challenge the capitalist mode of production of space, but also try to go beyond it – strategies of de-commodification, re-appropriation and alternative production of space.

We invite all governments, multinationals and institutions urgently to listen to it, understand it and enforce it.

Raqs Media Collective reaches well beyond the confines of the art world to appeal to communities both on and off line. “Raqs” translates into “dance” in Farsi, Arabic, and Urdu. But founding members Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta once jokingly stated, however, that raqs stands for “rarely asked questions.”
