Event Description

Brooklyn choreographer Yanira Castro is celebrating the launch of a new organism, a canary torsi, in a series of events scheduled throughout May and June 2009 and culminating in the premiere of her newest dance installation, Dark Horse/Black Forest, in the lobby bathroom of the Gershwin Hotel, with a LIVE WEBCAST on Dance-tech.net

Yanira Castro will debut her newest dance installation Dark Horse/Black Forest in the lobby bathroom of the Gershwin Hotel. Performances can be experienced live in the bathroom (for a small audience of 7) or via closed-circuit TV in any of the hotel’s 135 guest rooms. The piece is presented with Performance Space 122 and Neke Carson.

Dark Horse/Black Forest is an intense love story presented in the most intimate space: a bathroom.

The audience is privy to an emotional and private exchange between a couple that evolves into a formal, sensual dance. There are two casts that rotate bi-weekly: a man and a woman (Heather Olson & Joseph Poulson), and two men (Luke Miller & Darrin Wright).

The lobby bathroom of the Gershwin Hotel will be transformed by lighting designer Kathy Couch, installation artist Charles Merritt Houghton, video artist Peter Richards, and composer Stephan Moore. An installation of fluorescents, mirrors, and video screens will create a hyper-reflective space.

ABOUT a canary torsi
a canary torsi is engaged in the creation of multi-disciplinary interactive environments that have multiple facets: each acting as a stand-alone work and connected to live performance.

Every two years, a canary torsi will extend a formal invitation to collaborate in the form of an open Call for Proposal. This year, it is commissioning artist Lauren McCarthy to create two embedded audio streams for two fictionalized Twitter feeds written by Rozalia Jovanovic. Each feed is inspired by a character from Yanira Castro’s dance installation for public and private bathrooms, Dark Horse/Black Forest, performed by Heather Olson + Joseph Poulson and Luke Miller + Darrin Wright.

OverHereDarkHorse is a project by Lauren McCarthy and commissioned by a canary torsi. It is a physical installation designed for the Gershwin Hotel, and is on view until June 28th. Participants can tweet conversations, and other over hearings via twitter, which will be displayted on overheredarkhorse.com, making private conversations public.
