Jessica Rajko is an interdisciplinary artist whose work integrates dance-based movement practices with interaction design. She has collaborated with artists such as Mary Fitzgerald, David Therrien and Casey Farina and performed in work by Ashleigh Leite, Nora Chipaumire and Charlotte Boye-Christensen. As an assistant professor at Arizona State University, her current research explores wearable technology and human-computer interaction design for full-bodied movement. She is the co-founder and co-director of urbanSTEW (urbanSTEW.org), a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire and expand the relevance of digital arts in the community. As part of urbanSTEW, Jessica has developed artist workshops, curated arts festivals and created interactive installation and performance work. Jessica received her MFA in Dance and Interdisciplinary Digital Media at Arizona State University in 2009 and her BA in Dance and Psychology at Hope College in 2005.

Artist Statement:

Through my work, I imagine a world where the dexterity of the moving body is valued as much as the deftness of the mind. In this world, consciousness and intelligence are considered to be both bodily and cerebral concepts. The things we create incorporate all of our senses, and what we value does not isolate the mind.

As a dancer, I value my capacity to think in, about and through movement. This awareness drives my creative work and scientific investigations. Drawing from methodologies found in dance, psychology and technology design, my work exists in the liminal space between art and science - although it always comes back to the moving body.

Inspired by do-it-yourself (DIY) and do-it-together (DIT) culture, I prefer to work with collaboratively others and value the importance of sharing ideas. The outcomes of my work include dance performance and composition, wearable technology design and interactive, participatory installation design.

Deeply invested in my work as a dancer, I am passionate about building artwork, tools and resources that demonstrate vast beauty, knowledge and intelligence of the moving body.

Gone so Long - General Overview/Update - Details to Come Soon!

Posted on March 10, 2009 at 4:46pm 0 Comments

Hi Everyone,

I am sorry I have not posted for so long. Winter break at Arizona State University happened, during which I took a brief hiatus from Leonard (the wearer was out of town) - once we got back, we were slammed just to get done for the show - blah, blah, blah, I'm sorry. Leonard has been on the fast track to success. Here are some pictures of him:

Video Documentation

Hello everyone,

I made a few documentation videos outlining Leonard at this point. The three videos are as follows:

1. Putting Everything Together: Shawn tries on Leonard and I describe the next steps we will take to make Leonard wearable

2. Leonard's Head: I describe construction of the head…

Leonard has a skin! (And it's green and furry)

In our latest days of Leonard construction, we have ventured away from Chapter 1: the foam and, moved toward Chapter 2: the fabric. These two chapters in The Making of Leonard had a bit of an overlap as you can see in the below pictures.

As these pictures show, we added the center piece to the dome that Shawn will secure to the… Continue

The continuation of the DOME (aka - Leonard's head)

So two weeks ago we took our cardboard model and began rebuilding it with the foam. To our surprise, this wasn't quite as hard as we had expected. We figured that some modifications might need to be made in order to compensate for the extra inch of thickness not accounted for with the cardboard; however, this was not the case. (yay!) Here is a super speedy video documenting the process of building the top portion of the dome and the lower jaw.

WARNING: This looks much more productive… Continue

WE LIVE WITHIN AN UNSTABLE LANDSCAPE

This is a social networking website connecting people concerned about innovation and experimentation on art, dance, embodiment, cognition, science, networks, post-humanism, media and the unstable landscape of contemporary culture and life.

We are in a transitional phase and refocusing the network with a broader interdisciplinary framework. It will reflect a contemporary  community interacting and embedded  unstablelandscape.

This network is maintained and administrated by Marlon Barrios Solano as an independent art/curatorial/social innovation project.
