A Ballet From The Inside - Real Virtuality Experience

“A ballet from the inside” aims to create a virtual performance of a contemporary dance where users can embed themselves into the piece and watch from every point of view as the dancers evolve, as if they were themselves actors on stage. Research and motion capture prototype for this work was done by Cie Gilles Jobin in Geneva. The choreography is by Gilles Jobin, the dancers are Gilles Jobin and Susana Panades Diaz, and the music is by Franz Treichler.

24 infra red cameras Vicon to capture. Around ten to map in real time. It is not a cheap setup... Kynec is not precise enough, it is for kids, this is grown up toys...You also need to make the scan of the envelopes, in this case 60 photo cameras. All at Artanim in Geneva http://www.artanim.ch

What motion capture software is used?  Is it driven via a Kinect system?  Who is the manufacturer of the VR goggles?  I am doing motion capture and virtual reality and blended realities so just love technical details :-)  Thanks!

Hi,

The work is in a virtual space that can only be seen with VR googles. The dancers that the visitors are seeing in the VR environment are animations driven by Motion Capture date from Gilles and Susana. The visitors are been tracked by the whole mocap camera system in real time. So the visitors  move in the space as if they are in the VR space rendered in realtime with the dance happening in the center.

Thank you for posting this very interesting work! Can you give more specifics of the hardware and software? What gear are the viewers wearing? Which virtual reality world is this? Are the dancers live in virtual reality?
