This is a short excerpt of our new performance/education project for 2011-2012, Bytes.
The project explores how the practice of choreography is transformed when dancers can trigger and control music, animations and films by their live movements in the space. Working with composer, Nick Williams, media artist, Erato Tzavara, and filmmaker, Neil Richards, the DanceDigital dance artists have created visually stunning and intricate choreographies that exemplify exciting possibilities with new digital technologies in the arts.
DanceDigital BYTES has been designed as a modular and mobile project available to groups in different levels of education and in bespoke formats. It can be presented as a performance piece and as educational workshops, where new movement can emerge through playing with the available technologies used for the piece.

Emerge: Platform 2011

DanceDigital’s annual Emerge Artist Platforms returned to Trestle Arts Base this year, expanding its format to include two nights of performances and two installation works.

Emerge: Platform was an evening of new Contemporary dance works by DanceDigital artists Nina Kov (Associate Artist) Matthias Sperling (Commissions Artist), Darren Ellis (Commissions Artist), Kinisi Dance Company (Bursary Artists) and Marguerite Caruana Galizia (Bursary Artists).

Together, these artists represented a range of work from DanceDigital’s Digital Environments programme, offering insight into how Contemporary dance artists are engaging with cutting edge digital technologies.

Matthias Sperling - Thought Dance

A new interactive installation in which EEG brain-scanning technology allows the viewer to be the dancer and the movement of thought in your brain to be the dance. Thought Dance was commissioned by Dance Digital and created in association with Nottingham Trent University. It received support from the BDE Research Project, and was first shown at Trestle Arts Base for Emerge Artist Platform 2011.

Ip Tanz - I See U No.1

I See U is the UK premiere from German dance company IP Tanz. IP Tanz use dance and technology to provide an insight into how we live our lives, increasingly in the online world, and how that affects us.

I See U takes over three spaces at The Hat Factory, Luton, transforming them into personal worlds linked through video and sound. Through choreography, technology and the transformation of space, IP Tanz provides an opportunity to see how an online existence is changing our reality.

In this short video, choreographer Ilona Paszthy and members of the company give an insight into the ideas and processes that went into the making of the piece.
