From the time he first began frequenting French discoteques at a young age, Philippe Decouflé has been dedicated to exploring and creating bizarre new worlds through dance. Over a decade ago, with the creation of the Decouflé Company of Art, Decouflé began his wild experimentation with dance, film and outlandish costumes. As his career slowly took shape, he began experimenting more and more as he traveled throughout the world, staging dances in Paris, Barcelona, London and Africa. By 1992, Decouflé had built such a solid name for himself as an active, intelligent force in the arts, that he was commissioned to choreograph a dance piece for the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Lillehammer. This performance, including aerial ballet, stilt walkers, dancers imitating snowflakes and fantastic scenery that moved as much as the dancers, brought Decouflé and his company international fame. After a year of arduous work, and that one short night of performance, the company went from performing small pieces for "ballet freaks" to reaching an incredibly larger worldwide audience. As the years pass, Decouflé has become less interested in creating bizarre characters adrift in surreal landscapes, and has begun focusing on daily life. This shift in focus, however, has had no affect on the creativity and aesthetic honesty, which the name Decouflé has come to connote. Including interviews, archival footage and thirty minutes of performance, this exceptional film, which Decouflé himself directed, is a stunning visual journey through the exotic mind of one of the most vibrant and eccentric forces in the world of modern dance.
