This symposium and performance laboratory initiates a series of annually held research events at Brunel University’s Artaud Performance Centre, bringing together an invited group of international theatre and dance artists, filmmakers, photographers, art theorists and researchers engaged in creative practices that reflect on major innovative performance traditions of the past century and their impact on current performance knowledge and physical (or physical-digital) techniques.  The first instalment of the ARTAUD FORUM is dedicated to the memory of Kazuo Ohno and the complex convergences/ differences between Japanese and Western performative methods.

The symposium-workshop is composed of dialogue and performance practice, intermixed with live dance, film screenings and a photographic exhibition.

Participant observers are welcome to enrol for a £ 60 conference fee (£ 45 concession).

The “Workshop Words,” as the late Kazuo Ohno called reflections on his practice, will be published by the Centre for Contemporary and Digital Performance.

The featured participants will provide important stimulus to the conference from various perspectives, informing and challenging our thinking about the conference theme.

Dear dance-tech members,

Ukiyo workshop has been in London until 6th June.
In the workshop, we are studying new phase of dance expression both in vritual and real in next coming generation.
We are studying Japanese traditional art and concept, and also learning Hironobu Oikawa's Artaud Method. Young Saburo Teshigawara learned his idea and Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno was influenced by his idea.

Hello everyone
I see that Yukihikio has invited online colleagues and interested members from the community to join us in the London UKIYO2 lab - that is good - we have open door policy, and during the first few days several guests came to observe, and one performance artist/dancer (Macarena Ortuzar) came on June 2 to participate in the warm up and training, which we enjoyed much.

Whether it is possible to "workshop" online is something i doubt, unless one gears such a workshop towards a virtual (e)-studio.

In our case, the research for UKIYO is multilayered, involving examinations into Kabuki and butoh theatre/dance, the japanese ukiyo-e traditions of illustration, the early 20th century european/russian avant-garde and motion "capture" (chronophotography), manga, animation, wearable design movement and (ha) - post-interacivity. In keeping with a slightly humorous approach to the paradigm changes we felt we had been experiencing (from completed works to real-time interactive processes and processual art/installation/performance), my ideas about post-choreography in installations are now also confirmed to some extent by the passing of interactivity. We are barely using it in this workshop and the new production, it is too cumbersome and uninteresting aesthetically to dwell on, and so we only have one dance scene in which Katsura Isobe created a floating/moveable world (ukiyo-e in 3d graphic game environment) - here the interwtining of gesture and landscape works well, as the 3d graphic world is being created by the dancer's movement, and if she does not move, there is no evolution in the graphic creation.

This inter-actionrelationscape made us think of Artaud and butoh as well as our different dance styles (western conscious and, as our japanese partners explain to us, in this sad week of Kazuo Ohno's passing, japanese butoh-unconscious -- the butoh expressing the darker, more dangered, more ghostly and monstered side of our realist movement modeled after the constructivist and biomeachanical and Schlemmerian ideas of motion).

The inter-actionrelationscape also makes us think of the compounding of real physical presences on stage and analog sound presences (acousmatic, concret) and the digital projected presences. And here we will have to enter a discussion of avatars and the image as avatar, and taking inspiration from butoh and Bunraku (the japanese shadowy puppet theatre and also its related kabuki shadowtheatre and pantomime traditions) - we can also see the image projection (say, the 3d graphic world created by Doros Polydorou for our dancer Katsura Isoble) itself a interacting on the dancer, thus we can speak of a mutual relation:

the image projection acting upon the dancer as avatar/puppet.

Both the digital generative world (virtualities) and the dancer are puppets avataring each other.

This is a brief summary from the rehearsals and research discussions yesterday (June 4). Wo shall soon make some images from the rehearsal available.

The premiere of EUKIYO 2 will be June 18 at KIBLA Media Arts Center in Slovenia. We will then also publish a report here, written from both sides, the perspective of our japanese partners (Yukihiko and team), and the perspective of the DAP-Lab team.

hello all:
UKIYO/Moveable World (first version) was premiered at Antonin Artaud Centre, Brunel University, on June 1, 2009, on the opening night of the international IAPL meeting that took place in London that week (International Association of Philosophy and Literature).
The "choreographic installation" with its mixed reality performance of real dancers and virtual dancers (avatars) drew an audience of well over 150 people, and after the 45 minute installation a lively Q&A session took place within the installation space.

More information about this joint project (DAP-Lab/ dans sans joux and iNetDance Japan/Keio University), which will continue its second stage development in Japan later this year, will be made available here soon, along with filmic and photographic materials about our designs and performances.

A first diptych film installation version from the performance was featured at the 2009 Subtle Technologies Festival in Toronto, Canada, and subsequently traveled to Houston, TX.

hallo Yukihiko and friends from the "Ukiyo" team, it's good to see this "group" up here, and we can certainly publish a few photos from the last online performance meeting, I see that you put up a couple (below) that were taken in our London studio during the streaming performance, and then there are photos from your side in Tokyo. It would be nice to arrange a larger portfolio.

I also need to mention that our DAP-Lab, as we have now finally started our collaboration on the project and our preparations for the "Ukiyo" networked performance installation (planned for 2009-2010), the 14 members that came to the first extensive workshop on November 22, have been generating quite a bit of material (writing and reflecting on interactivity, real time composition, choreographic with interactive objects, design, sound synthesis, etc), and these themes, as well as content development, will be with us for some time. i am not sure that a "comment" box here is adequate for this, maybe one could create a forum or simply exchange the writing just amongst group members. what do you think?
