Andersen’s Little Mermaid is reborn as Song of the Mermaid by K-Arts Ballet.
Song of the Mermaid is a fantasy ballet from Korea, based off of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” It premiered as a lyrical pas de deux in 1997, and was eventually adapted as a full length story ballet in 2001. Choreographer Sunhee Kim strived to challenge her dancers by using an original score, composed by Hana Ryou, and incorporate unique and challenging neoclassical movements. After selling out for multiple seasons at the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, South Korea, the Song of the Mermaid is excited to make its New York City debut.
The New York Premiere performance will feature Principal Dancer, Kimin Kim of the Mariinsky Ballet as the Prince, who has previously performed, and received rave reviews, as a guest artist with American Ballet Theater. The role of the Mermaid will be shared by SooBin Lee and Seonmee Park; both dancers have numerous accolades from prestigious international ballet competitions around the world.
A great show for audience of all ages, we invite you to watch the love story of a mermaid and prince unfurl before your very eyes!
After tragedy strikes his ship, a prince finds himself drifting beneath the ocean waves. Saved by a beautiful mermaid, he finds himself at the center of a fantastic aquatic festival. The noble mermaid soon finds herself enamored with the prince, only to have their love forbidden by the king of the ocean. To fulfill their romance, she must take on a dangerous wager.
