"‘On the Trunkmaker: Theatre and Bourgeois Life’ -

This talk explores the relationship between theatre, the emergence of a 'public sphere' in eighteenth-century London and the circulation of commodities whose origins lie in colonial expropriation. Through a reading of a strange and suggestive contribution to The Spectator no. 235 (November 29, 1711), I offer an historical speculation about the entanglement of new public, commercial and theatrical freedoms in London with slavery, and a tentative beginning for a history of bourgeois spectatorship.

Nicholas Ridout is Professor of Theatre at Queen Mary University of London. He is the author of Stage Fright, Animals and Other Theatrical Problems (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006), Theatre & Ethics (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) and Passionate Amateurs: Theatre, Communism and Love (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2013).

welcome to UNSTABLELANDSCAPE

WE LIVE WITHIN AN UNSTABLE LANDSCAPE

This is a social networking website connecting people concerned about innovation and experimentation on art, dance, embodiment, cognition, science, networks, post-humanism, media and the unstable landscape of contemporary culture and life.

We are in a transitional phase and refocusing the network with a broader interdisciplinary framework. It will reflect a contemporary  community interacting and embedded  unstablelandscape.

This network is maintained and administrated by Marlon Barrios Solano as an independent art/curatorial/social innovation project.
