The University of Utah Department of Modern Dance and the Division of Film Studies are pleased to announce a call for submissions of original student dance works made specifically for the medium of video or film. An evening of student works will be presented on Thursday, September 10, 2009, in conjunction with the International Dance for the Camera Festival. Students of the University of Utah’s Department of Modern Dance and Division of Film Studies will present an evening of student works chosen from submissions from around the world. Selected by a jury of professionals and educators in the field, the adjudication process provides valuable feedback to submitting students. The adjudicated evening provides young filmmakers and choreographers a venue for their work, and provides audiences a glimpse of the work of future dance filmmakers from around the world. Being accepted are:


- Choreography for the Camera - original work made specifically for the video/film medium or staged work remade for the camera (performance documentation will not be adjudicated)

- Documentary - productions which include interviews or other educational elements in addition to choreography

- Experimental/Digital Technologies - work that extends the boundaries of the medium and exists only in the realm of video, film or new technologies


Students submitting works must be or have been enrolled in a full-time university undergraduate or graduate degree program, or a dance film workshop when the work was made. The postmark deadline for national and international submissions is 5:00 pm, Wednesday, July 15, 2009. There is no submission fee. Only Region 1 or All Region DVD formats will be accepted.

II. International Dance Film Festival

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:


The “Dance Camera Istanbul” 2nd International Dance Film Festival will be held in Istanbul, Turkey in between October 15th and November 15th 2009, focusing on video dance, dance on camera, dance photography and dance film screenings.“Dance Camera Istanbul” annually showcases international dance films, camera re-works and experimental movement-based films by contemporary video artists and choreographers from the student to professional level. There is no restriction on the subject.

The festival supports films which investigate the ongoing search for movement and spaces, both in and out of bodies.

The aim of the festival is to build a community for both dancers and filmmakers to come together, to present and promote both local and cutting edge international works, to share ideas, and to provide a collaborative experience for dancers and filmmakers as they work together to produce the final product.

“Dance Camera Istanbul” also focuses on increasing attention and awareness of the collaborations between dance, film, visual arts and music as well as the different mediums and forms of dance. The goals of “Dance Camera Istanbul” are to offer a proper venue in which to screen and share the works, to encourage and educate student dance filmmakers, to spread the knowledge of dance for camera, and to deepen the understanding of Turkish and international dance film practices through panels, practical workshops, discussions and screenings.
We are seeking enthusiastic individuals and groups who are strongly focused (or want to focus) on dance for camera work, video or multimedia installation collaborations. Examples include video dance, dance documentary, adaptation of a stage work or site specific creation, any kind of artistic and experimental work with kinesthetic energy and rhythmic design, and choreographic works that are created specifically for the lens of the camera and include a well- planned editing process. We invite you to be part of the “Dance Camera Istanbul Festival” family. Accepted works will be screened in various venues in Istanbul and throughout Turkey. In attendance will be Turkish and international dancers, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, artists and students, as well as both national and international audiences. During the festival, we will organize discussions between the artists, filmmakers and audience after the screenings.


Dance Film Workshops and Lectures/Panels

The workshops will be directed by acclaimed national and international dance and video artists, filmmakers and choreographers who will introduce different approaches to camera, dance and movement as well as providing information about video dance history, archives and links for further research. The workshops will take place at several dance studios and stages as well as access to indoor and outdoor spaces for filming. During the festival month, there will be national and international lectures serious on the dance camera work and the related fields. If you are interested in honoring us with your presence and lecture, please contact with us in regards to your possible topic. It would be our pleasure to start and organize a growing artistic environment and relationship.

By submitting your work you agree to give the rights to “Dance Camera Istanbul” to screen your work and archive it for the anticipated festival library.

This is the very first time that we broadcast a complete dance film and it made possible by the generosity of Gilles Jobin company.

Hello Dance Film Friends,

Here's a little more info on the September workshop I posted about earlier. Of most importance at this time is the call for student works. If you teach, please let your students know about the deadline before they leave for the summer so they can plan to submit. We will be bringing in a great jury and their comments will be available to your students, which can be quite valuable for them.

In response to Jody's interesting comment about submitting unfinished works, if a student would like to submit an unfinished work for feedback only, I think that would be fine. However, they would need to identify it as such. Unfinished works would not be screened, but if there's time for jury feedback, that could be valuable for them as well.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Please mark your calendars (and have your students do so also) for the University of Utah’s 7th International Dance for the Camera Festival and Workshop with award-winning Canadian filmmaker, Laura Taler (bio below), September 10-12, 2009, in Salt Lake City, Utah. With three evening screenings and a two-day hands-on workshop, it promises to be a great weekend immersion in Dance for the Camera. Registration Fee: $150 USD

Call for Student Submissions:
Students who are submitting works must be or must have been enrolled in a full-time university undergraduate or graduate degree program, or a dance film workshop when the work was made. The postmark deadline for all submissions (national and international) is 5:00 pm, Friday, July 17, 2009. Please submit Region 1 or All Region DVDs. DVDs will not be returned. Jury-selected student films will be screened the opening night of the festival.

Laura Taler (Canada) — Romanian-born director Laura Taler began her career as a choreographer. Her exploration of the effect of movement in different media and in unusual places led to performances intertwined with photography, text, and film footage: in a cemetery, a bar-room, on the stage, and on the screen. In 1995 she made her directorial debut with the award-winning dancefilm “the village trilogy”. Since then Taler has created over a dozen films that have been broadcast on the CBC (Canada), Bravo! (Canada), W (Canada), TfO (Ontario), ARTV (Quebec), Bravo (U.S.), Channel 4 (U.K.), NPS (The Netherlands), Kunstkanaal (The Netherlands), ABC (Australia), IBA (Israel), SVT (Sweden) and in numerous festivals and special screenings internationally. Taler also conducts dancefilm workshops around the world. Filmography: the village trilogy (1995); Heartland (1997); Dances For A Small Screen (1997); A Very Dangerous Pastime (2000); Perpetual Motion (2002); DEATH and the MAIDEN (2003); FORSAKEN (2005); THE SORCERER (2006).

DFTC 2009 is a unique opportunity for established and emerging choreographers, filmmakers, videographers, dancers and visual artists to explore dance/movement for the camera under the mentorship of award winning choreographer, filmmaker, curator, educator and recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship (2006), Ellen Bromberg.

PROGRAM
DFTC’s participants are individually assisted while exploring the technical, practical and artistic challenges involved in producing a dance/movement video in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Exercises with camera and dance are explored before diving into your finale video project

Daily screenings of contemporary dance films representing the cutting edge of DFTC are followed by discussions.

Screenings of your video project/s in progress are followed by critical feedback to assist you in bringing your final video project to a public screening on the last day of the DFTC program. view the trailer and other DFTC videos
